Ecclesiastical Statue

Having spent much of its time in a church this sculpture had collected a heavy layer of dirt and dust, it was possible to see that many attempts had been made to restore the piece over the years. Previous applications of paint had been disguised with a heavy coat of an unknown substance to purposefully discolour and age the surface, this restoration had also unfortunately covered much of the original gold decoration.

The statue was cleaned gently which lightened its appearance although there were many areas where the tinted varnish could not be removed without causing damage to the piece, these areas as well as details where gold decoration had been lost were toned in to create a more sympathetic finish.

The resulting effect was much brighter and vivid while still retaining an appearance commensurate with the age of the statue.
