In the summer of 2013 we took on the enviable project of restoring Barbara Hepworth’s Winged Figure mounted on the John Lewis Building on Oxford Street. It was time for the nineteen foot sculpture to received some expert conservation treatment as it had hung above one of the busiest of shopping streets since the early sixties.
Layers of pollution, dirt, plant life and and previously applied waxes were carefully removed with a hot water spray and by hand meticulously and gently cleaning away the unwanted dirt.
7 years previously we had worked on the full size moquette model of the winged figure for casting which was constructed in St Ives, Cornwall. We reconstructed the model to full size as a complete coherent sculpture and installed the piece at the new Hepworth Wakefield building in Yorkshire.
